ChatGPT Can Now Search Across Conversations, Projects and Files

Imagine remembering that ChatGPT produced the perfect analysis months ago but not knowing whether it was in a conversation, project, uploaded document or generated image. OpenAI has introduced a broader search experience across ChatGPT that can locate chats, projects, images and files from one place. The feature is available across ChatGPT plans globally on the web, iOS and Android.

Users can begin from the ChatGPT sidebar and filter results by content type. Selecting an item opens the relevant conversation, project or file directly, reducing the need to scroll through a long history or recreate previous work. For people who use ChatGPT occasionally, this is a convenience. For professionals building a large archive of research, client material and ongoing projects, it begins to turn ChatGPT into a searchable working memory.

Better retrieval can also improve continuity. A user can return to an earlier decision, reuse an approved explanation or locate the source document behind a result. Teams may spend less time repeating prompts simply because an earlier output disappeared into the conversation list. The feature is especially useful alongside Projects, where related chats and documents already share a defined context.

Searchability makes good information practices more important, not less. Vague conversation names and duplicated files can still produce confusing results. Sensitive material may be easier for an authorised account holder to locate, which increases the importance of device security, active-session reviews and appropriate workplace access. Search also does not prove that an old answer remains accurate; users must check dates and verify information that may have changed.

The update reflects a broader evolution in AI products. The challenge is no longer only generating an answer but organising the growing volume of work produced with the system. Businesses should use consistent project names, separate customers or workstreams appropriately and record final decisions in their approved systems of record. ChatGPT search can help recover useful context quickly, but a dependable knowledge process still requires ownership, retention rules and a clear distinction between a draft conversation and an authoritative business document.
