Google’s AI Answers Could Reduce Traffic to Business Websites

Imagine ranking first on Google for a valuable question but receiving fewer visitors because an AI-generated answer appears above your link. That concern is growing as Google expands AI Overviews and AI Mode into more markets, including France. The features can summarise information directly on the results page, accept follow-up questions and use images, files or live video to help people search in a more conversational way.

For users, the attraction is speed. A complicated query can produce a concise answer with supporting links instead of requiring several separate searches. Google says AI features encourage people to ask longer questions and explore subjects more deeply. For publishers and businesses, however, a useful answer delivered before the traditional results may reduce the reason to visit the original page, even when that page supplied information used in the summary.

Evidence about the traffic impact remains contested. Le Monde reported research suggesting lower click-through rates when AI summaries occupy the top of the page, while Google says it continues to send billions of visits to websites and has not seen the dramatic aggregate decline critics describe. In France, regulatory and copyright concerns delayed the rollout. Google also said hundreds of French media organisations would receive compensation when their excerpts appear in AI Overviews.

Businesses should not respond by abandoning search optimisation. Instead, content must give people a reason to continue beyond a summary. Original research, expert analysis, local knowledge, useful tools, demonstrations and clear commercial answers are harder to replace with a short overview. Brands should also structure pages clearly, maintain accurate organisation and author information, and build direct relationships through newsletters, communities and repeat visitors rather than depending entirely on a search ranking.

The larger change is that search visibility no longer guarantees website traffic. A company may be cited inside an AI response, mentioned by an assistant or used as background without receiving the same number of clicks it once expected. Measurement will therefore need to include branded searches, citations, enquiries and conversions alongside raw visits. As AI becomes the interface between customers and the web, the strongest sites will publish material worth referencing while offering experiences valuable enough to make people click through.
