Meta is no longer presenting AI as a feature added to social media. It is pitching a personal intelligence layer that follows the individual—and it is using open weights to make the argument tangible.
Mark Zuckerberg has renewed Meta’s vision of personal superintelligence: AI directed by individuals toward their own goals rather than centrally assigned to automate all valuable work. The company also announced Muse Glimmer, an open-weight model designed to run locally, and broader developer access to its Muse family.
What happened
Meta’s latest manifesto frames superintelligence as a tool for personal agency. The company imagines systems that help people create, learn, improve relationships and pursue ambitions across daily life.
The philosophy is also competitive positioning. OpenAI and Anthropic have built strong businesses around controlled access to proprietary models. Meta can distribute AI through WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, glasses and local devices. Open-weight releases give developers another route to use and adapt its technology.
Muse Glimmer reinforces the local-computing side of that strategy. A capable model that runs on consumer hardware can reduce cloud cost, lower latency and keep more data on the user’s device.
Why it matters now
The AI race is moving beyond benchmark leadership. Distribution, trust, personal context and cost increasingly determine whether a model becomes part of everyday life.
Meta controls an enormous social graph and a family of consumer devices and applications. That could make a personal agent remarkably useful. It also means the agent may sit close to private conversations, relationships, location and preferences. Personalisation and surveillance can share the same technical foundations.
What changes
- For users: more AI tasks may happen locally, with faster responses and potentially stronger privacy.
- For developers: open weights create room to inspect, customise and deploy specialised systems.
- For competitors: a model does not need to win every benchmark if it reaches billions of people through familiar products.
The tension
Personal superintelligence promises empowerment, but genuine agency requires more than personalisation. Users need control over memory, data access, recommendations and the ability to leave. A system that knows someone deeply can serve that person—or shape them.
The Agentica IX view: Personal AI should extend the individual, not turn the individual into a more predictable customer. The measure of success is whether people gain meaningful creative and practical range while retaining control of identity and intent.
What to watch next
Watch adoption of Muse Glimmer, the licensing terms around future models and whether local execution meaningfully reduces cloud dependence. Most importantly, watch the controls Meta gives people over memory, data use and cross-application action.
